The Oberlin College men’s soccer team gathered in a timely fashion as usual readying for our campus departure. The busses would have pulled out on time had we not stopped three blocks into the trip to acquire the lone passport left behind. Once headed for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport everything is back on track.

Twenty-six through check-in and security went off without a hitch. Settled into our seats, the team is anxious to begin the trip to Rio. The first leg of the trip was scheduled from Cleveland to Charlotte, however, just a few drinks into the beverage service our airplane began to descend rather quickly and unexpectedly. A loss of cabin pressure forced the pilot to descend to an altitude suitable to the conditions within the plane. Pittsburgh became our new destination. The likelihood of making our international connection grew less and less as we were given vague update after vague update. Then just like that we were corralled back onto the plane and into our seats headed for Charlotte. The five hour lay over scheduled in Charlotte in our itinerary was now spent on the tarmac in Pittsburgh and just 2 hours in Charlotte.

US Air flight 800 boarding for Rio de Janeiro the anticipation of our arrival is palpable. The team is just an overnight flight from the warmth and sun of Brazil. This trip has been a long time coming, down payments, fundraising and finally settling the bill. Who wouldn’t want to stay just a few blocks from the beach, train in a country brimming with soccer culture and compete against some top quality sides? Take-off, dinner, in-flight movie, bouts of airplane sleep and then FOG! We were nearly there, breakfast had been served and eaten, the squad was stirring and the cabin was preparing for arrival when news of fog in and around Rio had shut the airport down. A 180 degree turn by the pilot and we were headed for Brasilia to refuel and wait out the fog. A minor detour and delay in the lengthy flight. Smoke in the cabin upon landing was a little disconcerting but the crew assured us everything would be sorted and our return to Rio would be imminent. Upon further inspection the ACU had failed, whatever that is, and the aircraft has been deemed useless.

What, Brasilia is not a US Airways airport? The Delta technician did his best I am sure but all 200 plus passengers were removed from the plane after two very long, hot hours waiting for something to happen or someone to make it happen. After being shepherded through immigration, again the team waited a good bit of time before a baggage carousel began to turn. No familiar bags coming round. Eventually after seeing the same twenty-five bags seventeen times finally an OC Soccer bag, then another and then all of our luggage.

The rebooking of 26 passengers on the same flight was not an easy task but the kind folks from TAM Airlines took over for the now useless people from US Air and made things happen for our team. Another wait and a departure delay didn’t dampen spirits and the team patiently waited for a 6:30 pm flight to depart and head to Rio. Take off, smooth; in-flight sandwich, good; landing, easy; finally Rio de Janeiro. What could possibly go wrong now? Imagine this picture… the team with all their bags and Head Coach, Blake New waiting for his bag as the carousel turns with not very many bags… then finally the blue duffle pops through. We load the bus, travel out of the city on we are finally on our way to Buzios.

We are in Buzios after traveling for nearly 36 hours. A restful night of sleep and we'll be ready to begin our trip in earnest.

Oberlin Vs. Brazil

The Oberlin College Men's Soccer team is traveling to Brazil for their 2011 preseason tour in an effort to prepare for the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference season. It is said that in Brazil, every city has a church, a square and a soccer field. The sport is a national passion and is played in all corners of the country by all age groups. It does not matter the place - grass, sand, mud, asphalt -, all one needs is a ball to score a goal.

The team is just a day from our departure for the land of joga bonito and is putting in good time on the training field in preparation for the demands of playing against quality opposition. While spending time in the community of Buzios the Yeomen will find the opportunity to train alongside the local Buzios Soccer Club as well as test their abilities early in the trip with matches against the Under 20's as well as the first team. Following the team's stay in one of the world's most beautiful places we will transfer to Rio de Janeiro for the remainder of the tour. In Rio the team will enjoy accommodations just a few blocks from Copacabana Beach. Oberlin will square off against Botafogo's U-20's before concluding the trip with a match versus Portuguesa's reserve squad.

We hope that you will enjoy following our journey as we visit the land that has brought us the beautiful game. It is our goal to return to campus prepared to compete with a renewed vigor for the game. Check in with us from time to time for updates on the trip and throughout our regular season.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://yeomensoccer.blogspot.com/2011/08/oberlin-vs-brazil.html' title='Oberlin Vs. Then another pair defensive miscues nearly turned the game on its head in the final 10 minutes. Fortunately only one of the blushes was punished as Wooster sent the game to overtime. Where once again the Yeomen dominated much of the possession. The game-winner from Evan Atwell came five and half minutes into the overtime from a Oliver Miller-Farrell corner kick.

With the weekend came a road contest to #6 nationally ranked Ohio Wesleyan. Ohio Wesleyan dominated much of the preceding and capitalized early with a goal in the 9th minute. The Yeomen held their ground, bouyed by Zach Lipshultz's top drawer performance. The Yeomen found chances on the counter and through set pieces. The equalizer would come from one such set piece. Wyatt Hayman flicked on a Joe Graybeal long throw in the 51st minute to Oliver Miller-Farrell who poked home his second tally of the year.

So the week ended fairly well, sitting middle of the table on 4 points with a few games in hand. Also Oliver Miller-Farrell earned NCAC player of the week honors for his crucial goal against Ohio Wesleyan and his assist on the game-winner versus Wooster.

Here are the recaps of the action from our opening conference week.

2010 Goals thus far

Here's a little retrospective before our big conference clash with Denison Wednesday.

Pink Jersey Auction

<img style="display:block; The team donned the special uniforms to honor a member of our soccer family. Elizabeth Miller, mother of midfielder Oliver Miller-Farrell, passed away this past spring after a five-year battle with breast cancer. She was a leader in the fight against the disease and spoke at several conferences around the country to survivors and others battling breast cancer.

I got to know Elizabeth when we were recruiting Ollie and it was clear from the start that she was a dynamic person,” Head Coach Blake New said. “I would only see her occasionally, but when I did we had great, lively conversations and she was always concerned about others, but especially about her son. My two daughters were just instantly drawn to her, and each Parent's Weekend we would have to pry them off of Elizabeth's lap. She was a great person and so giving and loving, so we feel it is our duty to honor her by raising awareness of this disease that will affect all of us in our lifetimes."

We are raising money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and are asking $20 for a shirt. You can certainly donate more if you want, but $20 will get you a shirt! Baldwin Wallace

We finished up the home stand on Tuesday versus another OAC opponent with Baldwin-Wallace visiting Fred Shults Field. The game had an ominous beginning when BW opened the scoring with a tap-in off a quick transition in the 7th minute. Despite the rest of the 1st half's numerous chances for both sides, the scoreline would remain 1-0 to BW at the half.

We made some tactical adjustments at the half and took the initiative early in the 2nd half. Our attack pressed forward and Matt Capozzi nearly opened his Oberlin account only to be denied for a corner. That corner would produce the equalizer when Alen Cisija's service bounced around in the penalty area and found Wyatt Hayman free to roof the ball into the net in the 53rd minute. However six minutes later BW would cash in on a scramble in front of goal from a set piece to go ahead 2-1. We continued to take the game to our opponents and Zach Lipshultz put in another good display with some key saves to keep the game at 2-1 but chasing the game again would catch up with us as we conceded a brace in the 83rd minute. Then with the game at 3-1 to BW, Justin Griffiths took advantage of a poor clearance and a wandering goalkeeper to put the scoreline at 3-2 in the 87th minute. Though the goal gave us a lifeline, the clock would run out on our comeback effort and we were left to regret our defensive miscues once again being on the wrong end of the scoreline.

Not much time to regroup before we head to Danville, Kentucky to face perennial powers Centre College and Transylvania University. We open with a stiff test Friday playing Centre in their home opener and on Saturday we meet Transylvania, a sweet 16 NCAA team from a year ago. We'll surely be tested but look forward to the challange.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://yeomensoccer.blogspot.com/2010/09/oberlin-v-baldwin-wallace.html' title='Oberlin v. Capital

Our good start to the weekend and bright start to the game came apart in a matter of minutes against Capital on Sunday. We opened the game with a goal in just the 2nd minute from Oliver Miller-Farrell, who tucked away his first tally of the year after a Justin Griffiths through ball unlocked the Capital rearguard. However our bright start unraveled in the 30th minute when a defensive miscue gift-wrapped Capital an equalizer. Just a minute later another lapse saw us concede a second goal to Capital and the even contest now had momentum swinging against us. We went into the half confident we could recover from the one goal deficit. In the 2nd half we created chances and were buoyed by Zach Lipshultz's strong play between the sticks but we couldn't manage an equalizer, chasing the game eventually caught up to us and we conceded a 3rd goal in the 79th minute in transition. The game ended and we were on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. We left feeling equal to our opponents but weren't nearly as sharp on the night, so we look forward to correcting some of the lapses and rebounding against BW on Tuesday.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://yeomensoccer.blogspot.com/2010/09/capital-recap.html' title='Oberlin v. Otterbein

Our second match went much like the first, we had control for much of the game and couldn't quite connect in the final third. Though this time we did have to wait until the 75th minute for Justin Griffiths to tally his game-winner off a set piece. Otterbein had a bit more bite than Albion, but rarely threatened. It continues to be a good start keeping a second consecutive clean sheet but more potent opponents are ahead with Capital and Baldwin-Wallace looming.

Enjoy the game recap below. The team traveled to Albion, Mich. to take on the Albion College Britons. The team's objective was to treat the match as a business trip... get there, establish our style of play, get the win and return to Oberlin to prepare for a three game home stand. As the team unloaded from the bus the temperature was a bit warm and the air heavy. As the boys were halfway through their warm-up it began to rain, we experience on again off again heavy rain throughout the contest. The starting 11 found good rhythm and time on the ball to create good chances early. Sophomore forward Justin Griffiths turned on the top of the penalty box after receiving a fine entry pass from Oliver Miller-Farrell and buried the shot at the far post in the side netting. The team produced a few other moments of brilliance that came up just a bit short in the first half. The team endured an energetic spell from the Albion team through the first 20 minutes of the second half before finding the majority of possession through the final whistle.

"It was a good first effort by the team. We were a bit short handed due to a few injuries and a couple of first-year players who remained on campus to take placement exams. The combination play between our front players is really starting to come together and last night it resulted in a beautiful goal by JGriff," commented Associate Head Coach Wes Davis.

Enjoy the video footage of the first goal of the 2010 season. The returners look good and the incoming first-year players are integrating themselves well through the first two days of training. The team looks fit, technical and they are eating up every tactical situation we throw at them. As a coaching staff we are hopeful that over the next week the guys will continue to improve their fitness level and understanding of our tactics. The first two weeks of the season will provide the team with several competitive matches and should set us off on the right foot to challenge for the top of the NCAC. Junior Wyatt Hayman<dfn></dfn> and sophomore Oliver Miller-Farrell<dfn></dfn> were tabbed as honorable-mention selections.

“I am proud of these guys for what they were able to achieve this season as individuals, but more importantly what they meant for our team,” Head Coach Blake New said.

Dum, a native of Milford, Michigan, led the NCAC with 1.82 points per game and finished second in the league with 14 goals in helping the Yeomen finish 9-6-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the conference.

Jaffe, a defensive-minded midfielder, finished the season with one goal and one assist. He also played a large role in limiting Oberlin opponents to just 19 goals on the season – the third least in the NCAC.

Lipshultz, who stayed healthy for a full season for the first time in his career, finished second in the save percentage (.839), saves (94), saves per game (5.53) and goals against (18).

Hayman, one of the best center-backs in the NCAC, was also a key contributor to a stingy Oberlin defense that recorded six shutouts on the year while holding opposing foes to just 1.06 goals per game, which ranks fourth best in the NCAC.

Miller-Farrell, who missed some time due to injury this season, was still a factor in the Yeomen offense and as a main striker on corners. He ended the season with three assists, including the game-winner in double overtime against Wabash in the final game of the season.

Skylar was also selected to the NSCAA First Team All-Great Lakes Region team, he was a 2nd team selection a year ago. The entire Oberlin men's soccer team was awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award proving that you can continue to pursue your academic endeavors while being highly competitive.

Most Recently Dan Jaffe and Zach Lipshultz were named to the Jewish Sports Review's All-American teams for their efforts this season. Jaffe was a First Team selection while Lipshultz garnered Honorable Mention status.

Well deserved boys!

Faded Glory

Over homecoming weekend the men's and women's soccer teams hosted the annual alumni game, gathering past players from across the country. This year the game took on a new twist as the alumni played one another rather than the varsity squad. Thankfully the tradition of Oberlin winning was maintained. Here are some highlights from the cold, wet evening.

OC battles #2 OWU

Tonight the Oberlin College men's soccer team is hosting Division III power Ohio Wesleyan University. The Battling Bishops currently ranked #2 in the latest NSCAA national poll bring an undefeated record to the Yeomen's home field. Oberlin has yet to relinquish a goal at home during the 2009 season posting 5 shutouts winning all five matches. The two previous meetings between OC and OWU have been very tightly contested matches with both teams throwing everything they had at the other. OWU found themselves on the positive side of 1-0 scorelines in those matches.

The Yeomen are coming off a 1-0 win over NCAC opponent Wittenberg University this past Saturday to cap off Oberlin Athletic's Homecoming events. In a game where possession was fairly lopsided the OC players would have liked to see a few more of their point blank chance end up in the back of the net.

A couple of good days of training have us chomping at the bit to get out and defend our home field. Tonight will be a test and if we can put away our chances in front of goal I like our chances. A win for OC puts us in everyone's conversation across the country.

Go Yeo!

We are working to put together highlights from the Wittenberg match and will post some from the OWU game as well.

NCAC Play Heats Up

The Oberlin College men's soccer team is one day away from being fully engaged in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The team travels to Richmond, Indiana for a match up versus the Earlham College Quakers. The two teams will once again be playing for the rights to the Freedom Trophy. An EC alum initiated the trophy in 2005 given in honor of their 1954 team. The trophy represents the two institutions commitment to freedom and social justice.

The Yeomen are the current holders of the trophy downing EC 7-0 at home on Fred Shultz Field. We will look to continue our good start to the season (5-2-2) with a win on the road.

This past week the Yeomen went 1-1-1. Traveling to Case Western we struggled to find our feet on the turf and dropped a 1-0 game to a formidable UAA foe. On the weekend Oberlin opened NCAC play at Hiram College drawing 1-1. After falling behind Skyler Dum was able to level the score just minutes later. Although we would have rather won playing on the road and in an inhospitable environment earning one point for the conference race will do. During the midweek against Otterbein College, the Yeomen would defend our home field again posting our 4th shutout to remain unbeaten this season in the confines of Fred Shults Field. Josh Brancazio put the Yeomen on top midway through the second half and Dum tallied his 6th goal of the year to seal the match.

We hope that you have had the chance to see us in action via our webcasts of the past few games. I was worried about the game all week because BW was 0-5, but three of those losses were in overtime, and two were to nationally ranked programs. It was also their first home game, on turf (which isn't our favorite surface). BW came out of the gates hard and fast and it took us some time to wake up and match their intensity. We have talked a lot this season about setting the tempo and making teams adapt to our style and we did not do that last night. BW scored in the 18th minute on a corner kick and we wasted a couple of chances quickly afterwards. In the 36th minute there was a scramble in our box and Zach Lipshultz bravely tried to smother the ball at the six yard box, but the ball was poked away from him and a BW player slotted it home for a 2-0 lead. Our intensity level was much better in the second half and we had several chances. Skyler had three good strikes on goal but their keeper was up to each challenge. In the 75th minute our fate was sealed when Wyatt Hayman played a back pass a little too high and hard to Zach, and he tried to volley it out and miss kicked for the dreaded own goal. Our goal now is to put it behind us and prepare for Muskingum on Saturday night at home. We have to get back to our winning ways and I am confident the boys will be ready!....Go Yeomen.....Blake

Adidas Invitational

This past weekend the Yeomen traveled to fellow NCAC school Ohio Wesleyan University to participate in the Adidas Invitational with matches against Alma College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. You could say that we were a little Jeckyl and Hyde on the weekend. In Friday's match we were not at our best but managed to salvage a draw off a spectacular free kick from Skyler Dum.

The rest in the hotel, pregame meal from Olive Garden and some retail therapy at the mall must have put us back on track. Saturday evening we were focused and ready to play. Rose-Hulman was a much stronger side than Alma and the two teams went back and forth. A couple of near misses and another Dum free kick which came back off the crossbar left us even at the end of regulation. The team put forth a good effort and persevered through to the 108th minute when Dan Jaffe was able to redirect a Drew Williamson service for the game winner. I am always nervous before the first game of the season. I thought we were pretty good but you never know until you play another team. We opened the season with a decent performance against Heidelberg College, not great, but not bad. We were all a bit jumpy and our spacing on the field suffered but we worked our way to a 2-0 win. Our second game four days later we were much better against Albion college in a 3-0 win, but we still have to work on imprinting our attacking possession style on the game. The boys worked hard on Monday and Tuesday as we added in some important fitness and functional work. We are looking forward to a weekend away down at Ohio Wesleyan where we will play Alma, and Rose-Hulman, two very good regional opponents. Hopefully next time we will have some video or pictures to share. Thanks and GO YEOMEN!

Coach New

OC Soccer Kicks Off 2009 Season

The Yeomen got the ball rolling with a solid effort in the first contest of the season. The team played Heidelberg College on September 1 at home on Fred Shults Field to a 2-0 decision. The field is in great shape, the grass is green and flat and plays fast. The boys were able to string together some fairly impressive possession and we capitalized on two set pieces. Skyler Dum, 2008 NSCAA Great Lakes All-Region 3rd Team Forward, used his head on both goals. Oliver Miller-Farrell, sophomore MF and Wyatt Hayman, Junior CB were each on the opposite end of Dum's goals.

The coaching staff is optamistic about the 2009 season. We have incorporated 7 first-year guys into the squad and seem to have the depth to turn in a good season. The non-conference portion of our schedule is challenging and should prepare us well for the demanding North Coast Athletic Conference matches. The returning players are poised to improve upon the 9-8-2 performance from a year ago and the quality of the new players will help to raise the bar.

The players have all settled in and are nearing the end of the first week of class. The training through preseason was intense and competitive and has hopefully laid the ground work for a good season. The team is in good spirits and looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead.

We hope that you will follow us closely this fall. From time to time you should find actual game footage, player interviews and other interesting Oberlin Soccer tidbits. Wish us luck as we take on Albion College Saturday, September 5th.

The Creative Side of OC Soccer

Prior to the 2007 season the Oberlin College Soccer coaching staff provided a challenge to the members of the team. Create a few commercials to help draw fans to our matches. As you can see they got pretty creative. The commercials did the trick as we often drew large crowds for our matches. The addition of lights for the 2008 season has added a whole new dimension to the atmosphere created at our games. Enjoy the creative side of Oberlin Soccer.

The Soccer Project

Two former college soccer players have taken a journey around the globe to explore how a round ball can unite people from the farthest corners of the world. Our guys are so much more than just soccer players. On top of being great students, they each have various interests that make them unique. Today we will highlight one of our guys who has made his name around Oberlin and beyond as a great DJ. David Lowe and some friends from back home in LA have a music group called 3DI and they specialize in mashing up and remixing songs along with original production. If you don't know what I am talking about then visit their blog Just Gravy, No Potatoes and experience some of their musical taste and even download some of their mashups

Hat Tricks All Around

If you had the chance to watch the US Men's National team last evening vs. Trinidad and Tobago you saw Jozy Altidore knock three past the GK.
